The Last Song: Week of 9/29

Pages Read: 45-90
Prompt: Analyze the writing techniques used by the author. Explain the affect the technique has on the writing.

In the, "The Last Song" written by Nicholas Sparks I've noticed he has his his own style of writing. I have read a little from his other works such as "Dear John", and I can tell that he uses descriptive writing. Since my book is in third person, he has to involve detailed descriptions of the characters, setting, objects and such. With this it allows the readers to create a vivid picture of the story in our minds. For example, in the story (p. 70, pa. 1) it states, "There was an old-fashioned counter flanked with stools, the floor was black and white tiles, and cracked red vinyl booths lined the walls." This is a description of the setting, in which the author uses certain word choice such as, old-fashioned, cracked, vinyl, etc. In which helps express the visuals of the surroundings.

The author also uses a certain mood when after reading the author's work. I've noticed that in almost every chapter of this book it makes me nervous for what's going to happen, and gets me intrigued to get me reading more. It also sometimes gives me a feeling of sadness, and sorrow. There are many moments in which I just want to cry, and comfort the characters. For example in the end of a chapter it stated, "As he took his seat at the piano, he felt it again, the same thing he'd told the marriage counselor as he'd sat on the couch. He felt empty."Right when I read this part I just wanted to cry. This character named Steve who is the father of the main character Ronnie, is going through a lot and I just can't help but want to assist him in his current situation.

Nicholas Sparks has a very unique writing in which can be identified in almost all of his books. Although he doesn't write every book in third person omniscent, they are very similar. He expresses the character's thoughts very thoroughly, and detailed. Plus he describes the actions, setting, objects very descriptive, especially after dialogue. I really like the author's technique, and I hope that after I read this book I'll be able to finish "Dear John" :).
