The Elite A Selection Novel: Week of 10/16/14

Pages read: 0-40
Prompt: How does setting affect character or how does conflict drive character development.

In this sequel, from "The Selection" the main character America Singer, has been put in a palace, in which she, and 34 other girls have been selected to compete for Prince Maxon. America Singer, was forced to travel far way from her home, (which was not that big) and was put into a castle in which she was almost treated as royalty, where there are certain things she can/can't do in this particulary area, and in which is probably one of the reasons why this character has changed recently.

America Singer, the main character has been acting more elegant, and her personality has been starting to change. In the first book, she acted rather stubborn, sarcastic, and down to earth. Now she is just starting to get used to the ways of royalty, and has been more and more into Prince Maxon, which is probably one of the reasons why she's acting this way. She's very indecisive now that she's been put into this situation. For example, when Maxon is telling her to promise that she will stay, she says, "I like you, I truly do, but I can't promise that.  I can't." With everything she's been put into, she still doesn't know what she's going to do. But I think that when she keeps spending time with Maxon, she will eventually lean towards him.

Before, when she was a five (a rank/class) she lived in a not so big house, her house struggled with money and food, and she didn't even want to enter the selection. But now more that I've read especially, with this sequel, America is growing to love the palace in which she gets rich clothes, delicious food, supporters, and the fame. Plus since she's in the selection her rank/class has gone down to a 3 which is really good. Not to mention that in the first book, a character said that even if they don't win the selection, most of them will marry well anyway, and will still have money and such. So even America doesn't win, will she be one of those people? I'm not sure yet, but the setting has had a major impact in how the character has changed, and I realy hope that she finds out who she truly is.

  1. I have not seen romance in a book for a while. Do you think that she will become too accustom with where she lives at that she will become narcissistic with having the best of the best? How do the girls compete? Amazing blog!

  2. Great blog this week! I really like you word choice, it sort of fits with the book. I like how you focused on only one character for the blog instead of a few. It truly seems like you really like this book. It also looks like you get into your reading, hoping for America to find out who she is.
