“Esperanza Rising” By Pam Munoz Ryan
1- This book is actually one of my favorite books of all time. I read this in 5th grade, with our reading class. At first, I didn’t want to read it but as we read it as a whole class I’ve grown to to finally understand and enjoy the story. This story shows many lessons, and morals that I use to convey my own writing and such. An important lesson I’ve remembered from the story is to not take things for granted. I know people, that always say “don’t take things for granted” or “be glad for what you have” but to be honest I’ve never actually listened or cared about that. This story, did make me care and listen though. It showed me that, you can lose everything just like that and you’re life can easily change into something else that you would never imagine. Just like how Esperanza went from riches to rags in a short time, because of the great depression.
2. “Corduroy” By Don Freeman
When I was younger, I used to read this book all the time. I really enjoyed the pictures the author illustrated, which made me like the book so much. It doesn’t really have any morals or lessons, I think but it still impacted my life. As I read this story, it made me want to get a best friend that was a teddy bear. I wanted to have a friendship like Lisa and Corduroy.
3. “The Fault In Our Stars” By John Green
I know a lot of people might have chosen this book as well but I really think that it impacted me. It taught me that we should be thankful for the days we have. In this story, it showed me that even though it may seem like the end of the world, it’s not. Hazel was mostly negative and for it did seem like the end of the world, until she met Augustus who changed her whole life. I’m really glad I read this book, and it also had many other morals that I look up to.
4. “After Ever After” By Jordan Sonnenblick
I actually read this book in class, in which we got to chose a variety of stories to read. I had chosen this book because I thought that it would be very inspiring and funny. Which I was gladly correct. This story taught me many things but the only one I can remember, is that we shouldn’t let anything hold us back from doing what we want to do or achieve. Thad one of the most mentioned characters has made me laugh and cry during the whole book. He didn’t let his cancer get in the way of his personality, dreams and mind.
5. “Hunger Games” By Suzanne Collins
Again, one of the most famous stories most people might choose as well. Besides just loving this book because of the romance and action, I actually like other aspects of this book. This story has showed me that it can just take one person to make a big difference. Katniss the main character shows hope for many others, and is making a big difference in this strict, horrible society. She displays the image of a true leader, and motivates people from other districts to finally take a stand.
6. “Green Eggs And Ham” By Dr. Seuss
I know, another children’s book but it’s actually helped me with my understanding and rhyming when I was younger. In fact, I still remember most of this book to this day. I think that mostly everybody has read this book a point in their life. Dr. Seuss is one of the best children book authors that I know. He gives unique plots, lessons, and illustrations to a book. Plus one my favorite quotes I also remember, “I do not like them, Sam I am” will always make me smile for some reason.
7. “Holes” By Louis Sachar
In fourth grade, I read this book, and our fourth grade teacher had also read this book to our class. So, I’m pretty sure I have a good memory about this story. The story “Holes” had one of the most unique, and interesting plots that I have ever read. I don’t recall any morals or lessons from this but this story just affected me in a way that I would try to find books similar to “Holes” . I enjoyed reading how instead of the teens that have committed crimes go to jail instead were taken to a place where they would dig holes instead. At first, I was confused into why they would dig holes, but then I read the whole background story to why and it was something I never expected.
8. “The Giver” By Lois Lowry
This story really took a toll on me. I’m glad that as a class we got to read this book. I think this story has a beautiful message. In the story, Jonas the main character, receives memories of the past. Of course there are the good and bad, and according to the story, the bad memories are the ones that really strike and scare the receiver the most. Which is why, the giver must be careful. However, when Jonas experienced that bad memory he could’ve left. Luckily though, he didn’t and he came back determined to bring life back. Even though when we as people experience really tragic and horrible experiences we get through that, and with bad there’s good. Without color and they’re right to be free, they were missing out on a lot and I think in the end the risk was worth it.
9. “Perks of a Wallflower” By Stephen Chbosky
Just like the movie, I fell in love with this story. I admit, it has made me cry a lot. This story showed so much emotion that I just kept reading. When I read about Charlie’s character I couldn’t help but feel so attached to him. He’s the kind of character that you want to reach out to and just be friends with. In this story, Charlie battled a hard past, and no one knew, not even his family. He would fight with himself, and just be lonely. But like the famous quote says, “Everything gets better” actually worked out for Charlie. He finally found some great friends and had some of the best memories, and he was finally happy. Which is why I really loved this story and it will most likely always be one of my weak spots.
10. “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” By Dr. Seuss
One of my favorite childhood stories, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”. Another Dr. Seuss book as you can see, so I guess you can tell I was a big fan of his works. I really liked this story for many reasons. One of the main reasons though into why, is because it was really interesting and cool how the antagonist, Mr. Grinch ended up being one of the protagonists of the story. He wanted to take Christmas away, and ruin it but in the end he realized the good in it and gave back Christmas. Which is why, this story will always be one of my favorites.
