Prompt: Does the title fit the story? Why or why not?
Pages read: 58-162
I think the title fits the story because in the story, the giver which is the man who teaches, and gives memories to Jonas plays a big part in the story. The Giver, and Jonas have a special connection in which they share memories which are good but can be bad, and painful. However this job plays a big part in the society. Personally, I think The Giver is the wisest in the community, he sees colors, knows the past, knows what happened to the community, has memories stored, etc. A lot of people in that society don't even know half of what The Giver, and Jonas know. Making the title fit the story very well. Not to mention that if there wasn't a giver the main character, Jonas would be very different which is very important in the book.
Another reason why I think the title fits the story is because in the book the society tends to give things, or assign things to others. For example, they have ceremonies in which they give/assign jobs. Not only that but if people want a child, or children they have to apply for it. Making certain people give the children to them. The community is basically made for the people to work with their assigned jobs, follow certain rules, etc. in which there are all given to them.
The book is called "The Giver" for a reason. Of coarse there is also a receiver, who also plays a big role, and you may be asking "Why didn't they title the book The Receiver?" Well basically, how would there be a receiver if there weren't a giver? There always has to be someone to give, in order for someone to receive. But wait, wasn't The Giver once a receiver? It's true The giver was once a receiver because there was a giver, but as years went by they had to pick a new receiver, making the once receiver, a giver. Jonas is a receiver at the moment, but I'm pretty sure later on he will end up as A Giver.

I really like your blog this week.! I like how you described why you think the book is named The Giver. It was really interesting to see how you thought of it. Really good job!
ReplyDeleteI really like how you thought about the title. The fact that you mentioned the receiver idea was in my opinion, wonderful. I also enjoyed the fact that you had an image of the apple both with and without color.
